The Ultimate Carry-On Packing Checklist for Frequent Flyers
Share
Frequent flyers tend to land on the same packing routine because it's the one that actually works trip after trip. Here's a repeatable order to follow, rather than just a list of items.
1. Check your airline's size limit first
Before you pack anything, confirm the carry-on dimensions for your specific airline. Most U.S. carriers allow around 22 x 14 x 9 in, but it varies, and budget airlines are often stricter. Packing to a limit you haven't checked is how bags end up gate-checked.
2. Lay out everything before it goes in
Put every item you think you need on the bed first. Seeing it all at once makes it much easier to spot what you can cut than realizing it while already packing.
3. Pack in this order
- Shoes and heavy items at the bottom, along the wheels or base.
- Bulky soft items — sweaters, a jacket, anything thick — compressed into a vacuum bag before they go in, not after.
- Rolled clothing — shirts, pants, underwear — packed on their sides in the middle layer.
- Toiletries in a sealed bag, packed near the top for quick access at security.
- Electronics and chargers in an easily reachable pocket, since most are pulled out at security.
- Anything delicate on top, unpacked and unpressed.
4. Wear, don't pack, your bulkiest single item
A jacket or heavy shoes worn on the plane is space you never had to find in the suitcase at all.
5. Leave 10–15% of the bag empty
Souvenirs, extra layers, or anything you pick up along the way needs somewhere to go on the way back. Packing to 100% capacity on the way out usually means a battle with the zipper on the way home.
6. Recheck the weight, not just the size
A bag that fits the size limit can still be too heavy for some airlines' carry-on weight caps. Worth a quick check if you're flying internationally, where weight limits are enforced more often than in the U.S.
Compression bags help most at step 3 — they're what make it realistic to fit a week of clothing, including bulky items, into a bag that still closes without sitting on it.
